HW PMHNPs collaborate with each patient to determine an individualized plan of care that promotes emotional wellness in addition to symptom management. Modalities may include medication management, lifestyle and wellness interventions and psychotherapy.
2. Psychiatrists: These are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Like PMHNPs, psychiatrists prescribe medication, conduct physical exams, and provide psychotherapy.
3. Psychologists: Typically holding doctoral degrees in psychology (Ph.D., PsyD, or EdD), psychologists focus on psychotherapy and treating emotional and mental suffering through behavioral intervention. They do not prescribe medication but often work in tandem with psychiatric mental health nurse who manage the patient’s medication.
4. Psychoanalysts: These professionals are trained in a specific type of psychotherapy based on the theories and practices of Sigmund Freud. They delve into how unconscious factors affect current behavior and relationships, primarily through talk therapy. Therapy is usually longer-term.
5. Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs): LCSWs specialize in mental health and provide therapy and counseling. They don’t prescribe medication but often work alongside other healthcare providers who can.
6. Counselors and Therapists: This broad category includes licensed professionals trained in providing therapy and counseling for mental health issues, emotional challenges, and life transitions. They use various therapeutic modalities but do not prescribe medication.
