Which Type of Psychiatric Service Provider do I choose?

When it comes to mental health, finding the right type of psychiatric service provider is crucial for your well-being and recovery. With various mental health professionals available, it can be overwhelming to determine which type best suits your needs. In this blog post, we’ll provide an overview of the different types of mental health therapists and introduce our clinic, Head Well, which offers comprehensive psychiatric services.

    Types of Mental Health Providers:

    1. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs): Head Well’s Psychiatric Mental Nurse Practitioners are board-certified, licensed medical providers, specializing in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions through a holistic lens. HW PMHNPs collaborate with each patient to determine an individualized plan of care that promotes emotional wellness in addition to symptom management. Modalities may include medication management, lifestyle and wellness interventions and psychotherapy.

     2. Psychiatrists: These are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Like PMHNPs, psychiatrists prescribe medication, conduct physical exams, and provide psychotherapy.

    3. Psychologists: Typically holding doctoral degrees in psychology (Ph.D., PsyD, or EdD), psychologists focus on psychotherapy and treating emotional and mental suffering through behavioral intervention. They do not prescribe medication but often work in tandem with psychiatric mental health nurse who manage the patient’s medication.

    4. Psychoanalysts: These professionals are trained in a specific type of psychotherapy based on the theories and practices of Sigmund Freud. They delve into how unconscious factors affect current behavior and relationships, primarily through talk therapy. Therapy is usually longer-term.

    5. Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs): LCSWs specialize in mental health and provide therapy and counseling. They don’t prescribe medication but often work alongside other healthcare providers who can.

    6. Counselors and Therapists: This broad category includes licensed professionals trained in providing therapy and counseling for mental health issues, emotional challenges, and life transitions. They use various therapeutic modalities but do not prescribe medication.

At Head Well- Integrative Psychiatry & Wellness, our focus is on integrative management of psychiatric conditions and support for mental wellness. Our services include comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatments including traditional medication management, wellness interventions and complimentary modalities.
