Please note that our office will be closed September 2nd in honor of Labor Day.
When you have been trying to feel better for a long time, it can be hard to know what hope is supposed to look like. Maybe treatment has helped some, but not enough. Maybe you are still getting through the day, but not really feeling present in it. Maybe the routines, relationships, and parts of life that matter to you still feel harder to reach than they should.
Spravato may be one option to explore when depression has not improved enough with standard antidepressant treatment. At Head Well, Spravato treatment happens in our Eugene office with medical supervision, monitoring, and support before and after each visit.
You do not need to know whether Spravato is right for you before you reach out. The first step is simply a conversation about where you are, what you have tried, and what kind of care may help you move forward.
Considering Spravato does not mean you are starting over. It often comes after a long stretch of effort with medication changes, therapy, lifestyle changes, appointments, hope, disappointment, and trying again.
For some people, the hardest part is not only the symptoms of depression. It is the feeling that life has become smaller than it should be. Routines can feel harder. Relationships can feel more distant. The things that used to bring a sense of purpose or connection may feel less available.
Spravato is not about chasing a dramatic promise. It is about asking whether a different treatment approach, supported by a clinical team, may help create more room for progress.
Spravato is a prescription esketamine nasal spray that is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression. Unlike a medication you take at home, Spravato is taken in the office under clinical supervision.
At Head Well, treatment takes place at a Certified SPRAVATO® Treatment Center. Each visit includes support from the care team, time to rest after taking the medication, and monitoring before you leave.
That structure is part of what can make the treatment feel more grounded. You are not handed medication and left to sort through the experience on your own. You know where treatment will happen, who will be nearby, how the visit is structured, and what support is available before and after each appointment.
Knowing what to expect can make the next step feel less overwhelming.
Before treatment begins, Head Well reviews your symptoms, diagnosis, treatment history, medications, medical considerations, transportation needs, insurance requirements, and goals for care. This helps the team understand whether Spravato may be appropriate and what planning would be needed before starting.
On treatment days, you come to the office for your scheduled appointment. Each treatment room is private and quiet. We help you settle into a comfortable chair and can offer headphones, eyeshades, and a blanket.
Before you take Spravato, a care team member helps you get grounded and prepare for the session. You then self-administer the nasal spray under supervision. After taking the medication, you rest while the team monitors your comfort and safety.
Some patients feel sleepy, lightheaded, quiet, reflective, disconnected, or aware of changes in perception, body sensation, emotion, or thought patterns. The experience can vary from one visit to another.
There is no “right” way to feel during treatment. If you feel uncomfortable, anxious, or unsure of what you are experiencing, you can say so at any time. A care team member is nearby throughout the visit. After treatment, a trusted person will need to drive you home so you can continue resting safely.
Spravato care at Head Well includes more than the medication visit itself.
Before treatment, preparation helps you understand what to expect, talk through questions, and plan for the appointment. It also gives you time to think about what you hope treatment may help you move toward. After treatment, integration support helps you reflect on the experience and connect it back to your care plan, daily routines, relationships, and goals.
Some patients may also choose optional ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, or KAP, support during treatment itself when clinically appropriate. Because this service is often not covered by insurance, the team will discuss with you before scheduling.
The medication session is one part of the process. The support around it helps connect treatment to the rest of your care.
Exploring Spravato does not erase the work you have already done. It builds on your treatment history and gives you another opportunity to consider what may help.
During a consultation, you can talk openly about what has improved, what remains difficult, and how depression continues to affect your daily life. The team will evaluate whether Spravato is a clinically appropriate option and explain what treatment would involve.
Spravato may be recommended, or another direction may better fit your needs. Either outcome can give you more clarity about where to go from here. You only need to begin with a conversation.
Spravato is a prescription esketamine nasal spray for certain adults whose depression has not improved enough with standard antidepressant treatment. It is administered in a certified healthcare setting with monitoring after each dose.
Yes. Spravato is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression in adults. It is administered under specific safety and monitoring requirements through the SPRAVATO® REMS program.
Spravato is related to ketamine, but it is not the same as IV ketamine, compounded ketamine, or at-home ketamine. Spravato is esketamine, a prescription nasal spray with its own FDA approval, dosing process, safety requirements, and in-office monitoring structure.
Spravato may be covered by insurance when criteria are met. Coverage often depends on diagnosis, previous treatment history, documentation, and prior authorization requirements. Head Well can complete a benefits investigation and request prior authorization if Spravato is recommended.
Head Well currently accepts Moda, PacificSource, Regence BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, and Providence for Spravato treatment. Coverage depends on your plan, clinical criteria, documentation, and prior authorization requirements.
Patients should plan for about 2.5 hours. Spravato requires monitoring after the medication is administered, and the team will let you know what to expect before treatment begins.
Treatment typically begins with an induction phase of twice-weekly visits for 4 weeks. After that, visits may become less frequent based on your response, clinical need, and ongoing treatment plan.
Not necessarily. Spravato is usually planned as a course of treatment. Your care team will evaluate progress over time and discuss whether continuing, adjusting, spacing out, or stopping treatment makes sense for your situation.
No. You will need a trusted person to drive you home after treatment. Spravato can temporarily affect alertness, coordination, and perception. You should not drive until the next day after a restful night’s sleep.
Possible side effects can include sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, dissociation, changes in perception, increases in blood pressure, or feeling disconnected during or after treatment. Patients are monitored in the office after each dose.
No. Spravato is not a substitute for emergency care, hospitalization, or crisis support when those are needed. If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
No. Head Well is located in Eugene and may serve patients from surrounding communities or other parts of Oregon when treatment is clinically appropriate. Because Spravato requires in-office visits and transportation home after each session, patients should be able to travel to the Eugene office regularly during treatment.
